Journalists Jeremy Scahill (Blackwater) and Naomi Klein (Shock Doctrine) have done a first rate job in exposing ways in which war has been redefined in the hands of the private sector. A company or an individual that makes money through the waging of wars (and engaging in long-term occupation) used to be called a "war profiteer."
Over the last two decades or so, the postmodern war profiteers have grown without oversight and manage not only to secure the government contracts, but also to make enormous profits out of war and occupation. The so-called "security" firm, formerly known as Blackwater, yes, but I'd also include the corporations, such as Burger King, that sell food to US personnel at overseas bases.
